 A view of Edinburg, Scotland.
by Steve Nigohosian
Talented classical percussionist and LP player
Evelyn Glennie
donated her time and talent to benefit the charity
organization VSO, to support the work of volunteers
working with children with disabilities in Eastern
and Central Europe. The performance, which took place
at The Queen's Hall in Edinburgh, Scotland, also had
a very special guest in the audience: The Duchess
of Kent.

On stage, Ms. Glennie had a wide range of percussion
instruments, from a drumset (which she played
standing up) to marimba, bagpipes, and strange, metallic-shaped
hanging objects which she struck periodically to elicit
an eerie, "ringing" chime-like noise. Of course, she
also had her share of LP instruments, including claves,
Jam
Blocks, timbales,
and Granite
Blocks.

Glennie's LP set-up.
Accompanied by pianist Philip Smith, Ms.
Glennie performed several compositions, including
'Objects' UFO (6th Movement) by Michael Daugherty,
Ilijas by Nebojsa Zivkovic, and Los destellos de las
resonancia by Roberto Sierra.

Ms.
Glennie is the first full-time, solo percussionist
in the world, and was born in Aberdeen, Scotland.
She has received critical acclaim all over the globe,
and continues to "push the envelope" of music by creating
new and interesting compositions by using contemporary
instruments in non-traditional ways.
