Tito Puente Becomes a New York Yankee for a Day

Most people are used to seeing Tito Puente "play" from behind his LP Tito Puente Timbales. But he recently got the opportunity to demonstrate his "playing" behind the pitcher's mound at Yankee Stadium on April 20, 1999, when he threw out the ceremonial first pitch for the New York Yankees and Texas Rangers game. (Just in case you missed the game it was NY Yankees 4, Texas Rangers 0.)

Coincidently, April 20th is also Tito's birthday, so he had to cut his career short as a New York Yankee and rush over to his birthday bash held at Jimmy's Bronx Café. The star-studded event included such celebrities as Bill Cosby, Tito Nieves, Dave Valentin and Lionel Hampton, who all wished "The King of Latin Music" a very happy 76th birthday. The highlight of the event occurred when an All-Star Jam brought the party to its momentous close.
