 It takes great chops and versatility to cross back and forth between soul singer Luther Vandross and jazz bassist supreme Ron Carter, but percussionist and LP endorser Steve Kroon loves a challenge. "I think of it as cooking," he laughs. "The texture shows you how to bring out another flavor in the music. You have to learn how to add the spices. Each music has a different spice."
Steve can be seen on tour with Luther Vandross in late '97, and can be heard on Ron Carter's The Bass and I. "I started from the beginning with Luther, and to see it become such a successful thing and to be a part of it was very inspiring. Kroon also feels fortunate working with Ron Carter someone he considers a friend -- there's so much history being around a master like that. Kroon can also be heard on Bill Cosby's upcoming jazz album, Hello Friend by Verve Records.
Steve's father played a steady diet of Tito Puente, Machito, and Tito Rodriguez records around their house when he was young. Steve sang in a vocal group in his early teens, then started playing percussion at 15 -- a set of LP Tito Puente Timbales to be exact. At 19 he took up the congas and first saw Mongo Santamaria."I was always impressed with LP," he says, "I used to go out and buy the books just to see their endorsers. When you're that much in love with the music, the endorsers are a part of your life. It's all a part of wishing, dreaming, and then applying.
