Larry Lelli is one of the top-call freelance drummers in NYC. At present he holds the coveted drum chair at the smash hit Broadway show "The Producers "; he's completing a limited engagement for the new Sondheim/Weidman musical "Assassins"; and he's playing to sold-out crowds nightly at the famed NYC disco Studio 54. The flexibility of these gigs allows him to stay active in the recording and touring world, where he plays with artists ranging from rocker Sebastian Bach to pop singer Vanessa Williams. Larry has played in countless jingles, on innumerable film soundtracks, and for virtually every major variety TV show based in NYC. He has made world tours with performers like country artist Doug Stone and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees The Mamas & The Papas, on their reunion tour.
Although his first love is the pop/rock singer-songwriter groove, Larry has often been called a "musical chameleon," for his background covers so many styles, ranging from his Bachelors degree in Jazz and Percussion from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire; his jazz days with virtuoso pianist Geoff Keezer; doing time with a smokin' latin band with famed trombonist Andre Stephani; swinging with the nationally acclaimed Cedar Avenue Big Band; and his brush-lovin', train-beat years in Nashville with Doug Stone. Whether he is laying it down in the clubs with indie rockers like SuffraJett or laidback singer/songwriters like M.A. Rose, Larry is thrilled to call NYC home -- and to be making music with LP.
Larry can currently be heard on the soundtrack for "Assassins" and was recently seen doing a stint with Leslie Clemmons at NYC's famed "The Knitting Factory." He also appeared on the Tony Awards Show telecast, which was broadcast live from Radio City Music Hall on June 6th. Look for him in the feature article "Broadway Drummer Roundtable" in the August 2004 issue of "Modern
Drummer."
Larry's favorite LP instruments are: Jam
Blocks,
Cyclops
Tambourines, Soft
Shake Shakers, and Studio
Bar Chimes.
According to Larry:
"I love to incorporate LP percussion all around my drumset, particularly the Jam Blocks and Cyclops Tambourines. They give me so many more musical choices than just drums and cymbals. LP helps me add new colors and textures to the music."
"LP makes so many wonderful sounds, and LP makes them so easy to fit into anyone's drumming setup. The Mount-All percussion brackets are invaluable, small and lightweight, allowing us to fit everything from a cowbell to a Jam Block in the smallest space without adding much weight to the hardware bag, and very affordably as well."
"The quality of all LP instruments is always up to the highest standards, and it's unmatched by any of their competitors in sound quality and durability. Whether I'm on the road with a pop artist, or at home in NYC at my Broadway show, I play on my LP gear EVERY SINGLE NIGHT: I know I can count on my LP gear to always sound great. That reliability means a lot to me."
"I've tried them all, and always conclude that LP makes the best percussion products out there."
