Paoli
Mejías is a distinguished young master percussionist, clinician
and bandleader who has been performing for more than 20 years and is
ranked among the best players in both salsa and Latin jazz.
Born in Puerto Rico in 1970, Paoli was 12 when he first played conga,
inspired by Patato" Valdéz, Batacumbele & Irakere.
Paoli's professional career began in his teens, playing with Rafu Warner,
José Nogueras, Glenn Monroig & Charlie Sepúlveda.
Paoli's resumé includes top Latin jazz and salsa artists: Eddie
Palmieri with whom he toured with for over a decade, as well as Tito
Puente, Seis del Solar, Dave Samuels, Dave Valentín, David Sánchez,
Danilo Pérez, Chick Corea, Kip Hanrahan, Paquito D'Rivera, Hilton
Ruiz, Luis Enrique, La India, Marc Anthony, and many others. Paoli's
discography includes more than 20 commercial recordings, among them
Grammy Award nominee "Acuarela de Tambores" by Alex Acuña & Grammy
Award winner "Masterpiece" by Tito Puente & Eddie Palmieri.
Paoli is now at the vanguard of Latin jazz as leader of his own Quintet,
with two highly regarded recordings under his own independent label: “Transcend” (2006)
and “Mi Tambor” (2004) which received a Grammy Award nomination
in 2005 for Best Latin Jazz Album. Paoli’s Quintet is creating
a new dimension of Latin Jazz by fusing straight-ahead jazz, salsa,
be-bop, swing & rumba with folkloric rhythms. With his innovative
vision, global style and unique sound Paoli Mejías is capturing
