Stephen Perkins is the wizard behind the drums, percussion, samples, electronics, and hypnotic rhythms of Porno for Pyros' most recent release, God's Good Urge. With Porno for Pyros, Perkins is exploring a "softer, more spiritual" sound than the heavy grooves and fast beats of his previous band, Jane's Addiction. He has also recorded with such major artists as: Banyan, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Love and Rockets, Nine Inch Nails, Mike Watt, and No Doubt. When not performing or recording, the California-based musician leads drum circles for the handicapped, drumming camps for special-needs children, and drum-therapy sessions for the elderly.
Perkins' early musical influences included drummers Gene Krupa, Elvin Jones, Keith Moon, and John Bonham. He started playing the snare drum at age nine, and acquired his first LP gear (black
fiberglass bongos) a few years later. Perkins'
primary instruments today are a drum set, a slit drum,
steel drums, bongos, and timpani. "I like the pure
tones and solid quality of LP products," he says,
"and they're good people at LP."
