Carol Steele

Carol SteeleCalifornia's Bay Area has long been known as a hotbed of eclectic and unique musical styles. So it's no surprise that Carol Steele, born and raised in San Francisco, acquired her passion for Afro-Cuban music.

After years of studying and performing Afro-Cuban music, Steele's dream came true when she had the opportunity to play with Mongo Santamaria in 1974. She fondly recalls that day as her "first 'professional' Latin gig." Later in her career shehad the the honor of being the first woman and American to play with her idols Los Muñequitos de Matanazas.

Throughout her career, Carol has recorded and performed with artists like Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood, Peter Gabriel, Jaco Pastorius, Howard Jones and Jeffery Osborne. She is also deeply involved in performing her own music, in which she weaves her Cuban influences and experiences into a contemporary sound.

As a clinician, Carol strives to share her knowledge as a percussionist with up-and-coming players. Her focus, in addition to having fun while playing, is exploring the role of percussionist within the pop music genre. This includes how to approach the percussion arrangement and how to effectively listen to the rest of the band for a team effort.
