Congas/Percussion for Mariachi Divas.The fascinating elements that Cindy Shea, Keiko Okamoto, Nelly Cortez, Rocio Marron, Lorraine Feesago, Suzanne Garcia, Leticia Sierra, Lorena Panella, Mayra Martinez, and Mona Seda, and Divas Drummer Claudia Cubides bring with them from their respective cultures and training make this unique ensemble a delight to audiences and a formidable presence within the Los Angeles music scene. Mariachi Divas is represented by women of: Mexican, Cuban, Samoan, Argentinian, Japanese, Colombian, Swiss and Anglo decent. Founder and Musical Director Cindy Shea states, "Music is a way of uniting our cultural backgrounds and Mariachi Divas represents the “melting pot” of ethnicity that the United Sates is today.”
Though the group is based in the Mariachi tradition, the addition of timbales, congas, bongos, cajón, tambora, percussion, tres, and flute to the traditional mariachi ensemble of guitarrón, vihuela, guitar, violin, and trumpet reflects the varied skills of its members. Blending these non-traditional instruments with the traditional mariachi elements allows the “Mariachi Divas” to play a variety of styles including cumbia, cha-cha-cha, and merengue. “Ranchengue”, a unique combination of a ranchera played in merengue fashion, is a style that the Divas themselves have created and play to perfection. Never transgressing from the sound that united them, the Mariachi Divas continue to be faithful to the Mariachi tradition while complimenting it with a myriad of different styles.
