The Jazz Journalists Association has announced its 2006 Jazz Award Winners and Latin Percussion is proud to report that Dafnis Prieto has been named Up & Coming Musician of the Year.
The Cuban-born, New Yorker is a highly regarded drummer, whose countless performances with a variety of jazz and Latin performers would be enough on their own to merit to an award. There is more, however, Dafnis is an innovative composer, and besides playing tunes with other artists and projects, he has released two highly acclaimed albums, About the Monks and Dafnis Prieto Absolute Quintet. In addition, he is a bandleader and has performed at clubs, festivals, the annual International Association of Jazz Educators' gathering in New York and the Montreal International Drum Fest.
The talented LP artist has enjoyed the respect of hundreds of international journalists, writers, broadcasters and photographers who comprise the Jazz Journalists Association, a non-profit organization that announces the yearly Jazz Award winners pursuant to member voting. Dafnis takes his place in the 2006 awards alongside such luminaries as Roy Haynes, Sonny Rollins and Pat Metheny.
Dafnis Prieto’s recorded work spans an incredible diversity of performances running the gamut from Henry Threadgill to Michel Camilo.
