Once again, Latin Percussion
was a proud sponsor of the eleventh annual Conservatory
of Music of Puerto Rico International Percussion Festival. A number of distinguished
LP artists, including the Reyes family, Paoli
Mejias, Robert Rosario, and Antonio
Sanchez helped steer this year's event, held from January 19 through 21 in
San Juan, to unqualified success.
Walfredo Reyes,
Jr. presented a drumset clinic in which he integrated a variety of LP
percussion instruments into Latin, rock, and funk styles to the delight
of the audience. Backed up by Puerto Rican stalwarts Ramon Vazquez on bass
and Paoli Mejias who demonstrated is virtuosity on both congas and bongos. “Wally” delivered
stunning versions of Latin pop standards including “Oye Como Va”.
Incidentally, Paoli gave a road test of the new LP
Matador Puerto Rican Flag Congas-a real crowd pleaser!
The incredible Antonio
Sanchez conducted a tour de force on the drumset, displaying signature
techniques that, at times, defied comprehension. Equally adept at performing
clave variations with his left foot (using the LP
Gajate Bracket) and extraordinary polyrhythms with all limbs, Sanchez
left witnesses in awe of his command of the drumset.
This autumn, while on break from touring with Pat Metheny, Antonio
Sanchez and his band will be featured artists at the Lincoln Center in
NYC.
As in past years, many local and international performers took part in the
eleventh annual Conservatory of Music of Puerto Rico International Percussion
Festival. The event has earned its spot among the world's top festivals and
LP is proud to be a sponsor.
